Solo ride completed in Feb 2025. I flew down to Santiago, Chile' and then Puerto-Montt, Patagonia. Rented a mountain-bike from Ernesto (www.pueloadventure.cl) in Puerto-Varas nearby and started heading south on the Carretera-Austral (ruta 7). I made stops at: Contao, Hornopiren, Chaiten, Puerto- Cardenas, Villa Santa Lucia, La Junta, Puyuhuapi, El Lobo, Villa Amengual, Villa Manihuales, Villa Ortega, Coyhaique, El Blanco, Villa Cerro Castillo, Katenke, Puerto Murta, Pared Sur and Cochrane. Then took a bus with my bike back to Coyhaique where I was able to drop off the rental bike without having to take it back to Puerto Varas, 400 miles to the north. All together cycled 600 miles (1,000+ KM) half of which on gravel roads in very hilly and windy terrain with a total elevation vertical climb of 34,478 feet over the 600 miles ridden according to Google Maps . The weather was suitable for riding with the exception of two rainy days. It gets cold overnight and in the mornings (40F-45F), but can get up to 70F+ in the early afternoon. It is a very remote part of Chile, connected by a single narrow road (gravel and pavement) so, do not expect your choice of food and top accommodations everywhere.
